Course Content

The qualifications aim is to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills of the principles of IT and Global Information Systems. You will gain an insight into the IT sector as you investigate the pace of technological change, IT infrastructure, the flow of information on a global scale, and the importance of legal and security considerations. Designed in collaboration with experts spanning the breadth of the sector, the Level 3 Cambridge Technicals in IT focus on the requirements that today’s universities and employers demand.

This pathway focuses on the use and development of virtual and augmented reality and emerging technologies for application across a range of sectors, to include: mobile technology, digital marketing and the visualisation of Big Data.

The course consists of the following Units:

Unit 1: Fundamentals of IT

Exam

  • Unit 1 – Fundamentals of IT
  • Understand computer hardware
  • Understand computer software
  • Understand business IT systems
  • Understand employability and communication skills
  • Understand ethical and operational issues and threats to computer systems

Unit 2: Globalisation

Exam

  • Understand where information is held globally and how it is transmitted
  • Understand the styles, classification and the management of global information
  • Understand the use of global information and the benefits to individuals and organisations
  • Understand the legal and regulatory framework governing the storage and use of global information
  • Understand the process flow of information
  • Understand the principles of information security

Unit 5 – Virtual and Augmented Reality

Internal assignment

  • Understand virtual and augmented reality and how they may be used
  • Be able to design virtual and augmented reality resources
  • Be able to create a virtual or augmented reality resource
  • Be able to predict future applications for virtual and augmented reality

Unit 13 – Social media and digital marketing

Internal assignment

  • Understand digital marketing
  • Understand the use of social media in a business
  • Be able to plan content and propose appropriate social media channels for digital marketing campaigns
  • Be able to develop social media digital marketing campaigns

Unit 18 – Computer systems – hardware

Internal assignment

  • Understand the components of a computer system
  • Be able to propose a computer system for identified business requirements
  • Be able to build or upgrade computers
  • Be able to test and evaluate the functionality of computer systems

 

Skills / Aptitudes required to be successful in this course:

It would be advantageous if learners have studied similar unit content at Level 2 such as Computer Science of Information Technology. It is recommended that learners have, or are working towards, a grade 5 or above in maths and English GCSEs. Students should have an active interest in Information Technology and Computing that extends beyond playing games and and consuming multimedia.

How will I be assessed?

Learners must achieve a total of 5 units consisting of 2 mandatory examined units and 3 further units. The units are detailed above.

What have students who have taken this course in the past progressed to?

The qualification will enable learners to acquire a range of transferable skills and knowledge which are highly regarded by higher education providers and employers. It has UCAS tariff points and provides a good grounding for progression to university to take one of many relevant degree programmes, for example: Computing and ICT; Computing Science; Software Developments; Software Engineering; ICT and Computer Networks; Business Information Systems. (It is always important for learners to check individual course requirements when applying to university)
